Morbidly obese BMI, A morbidly obese two-year-old Saudi Arabian toddler has been revealed to the youngest person in the world to undergo weight loss surgery.
The toddler weighed 5st 3lbs (33 kg) when surgeons conducted the operation,
according to a new report in a medical journal.
The unnamed boy's legs were bowed under his weight, he was suffering from
sleep apnoea that caused him to stop breathing while asleep and attempts to
control his weight by dieting had failed. His body mass index was a
life-threatening 41.
The doctors conducted a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in which they
removed an outer layer of stomach to restrict his food intake. Unlike a lap
band, the surgery is not reversible.
The case is documented in this month's edition
of the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.
The boy weighed a normal 6lbs 10oz (3 kgs) at birth. But by six months, his
parents, who do not have a history of morbid obesity, noticed that their son
was becoming much more than a chubby baby.
